What are the differences between medical aid and medical insurance?
Price.
In a Medical aid scheme the prices are fixed to the plan and members on the plan. Medical insurance is costed on a risk-rated basis dependent on the conditions of the individual. Medical insurance is usually a cheaper option than medical aid.
Hospital and Chronic benefits.
Medical aid provides comprehensive cover for dreaded diseases and are accepted by most private hospitals, dependent on the scheme’s benefits package. Health insurance provides a lump sum, or daily currency amount for hospitalization costs.
Types of covers
Medical aid scheme covers in-hospital benefits according to the National Recommended Price List limiting benefits as per the plan and fully covers prescribed minimum benefit.
Health insurance covers your day-to-day medical expenses or covers the cost of a specific medical procedure but does not have to provide cover for prescribed minimum benefits but pay out a specified benefit when you suffer from a health event covered by the policy.
